From Education Entrepreneur to Australian Lawyer

When Dr. Wai Kin Kam (DBA '26, MBA '11, BBA '10) founded an education and music-training organization in Hong Kong in 2001, he never imagined his professional journey would eventually span education, business, and law. Yet each stage of his career has been connected by a common belief: learning should never stop.  

Over the past two decades, Dr. Kam has built a career helping others learn and develop their talents. Through his education and music-training organization, he has taught students of various ages, developed curricula, managed educational programs, and organized international music competitions. Along the way, he discovered that running a successful educational organization required much more than subject-matter expertise. 

"As our programs expanded, I found myself constantly making decisions involving management, marketing, strategic planning, and organizational development," Dr. Kam explained. "I wanted to strengthen those skills through formal education." That desire led him to the University of Management and Technology (UMT). While continuing to manage his organization and fulfill his professional responsibilities in Hong Kong, he completed his Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration through UMT's flexible distance-learning programs. The experience not only expanded his understanding of business management and leadership but also inspired him to continue his academic journey at the doctoral level. 

Education became more than a personal pursuit for Dr. Kam. His wife also completed her MBA through UMT and is currently pursuing her DBA. Together, they have embraced lifelong learning to expand their knowledge, support one another's goals, and continue growing both personally and professionally. 

Today, Dr. Kam serves as Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Gifted Education and Talent Development Association, a charitable organization dedicated to promoting gifted education and creating educational opportunities for young people. He credits his UMT studies with helping him approach educational leadership and organizational management with greater confidence and strategic focus. 

His doctoral research allowed him to connect academic theory directly with his professional experience. For his Doctor of Business Administration dissertation, Dr. Kam examined the marketing strategies used by private tutors and explored how those strategies influence business success. "Because my research focused on challenges I had observed throughout my career in the education sector, the project was especially meaningful to me," he said. "It helped me better understand how educational professionals can build sustainable businesses while continuing to serve students effectively." The research strengthened his skills in critical analysis, evidence-based decision-making, academic writing, and independent research, skills that would prove valuable far beyond the classroom. 

While pursuing advanced business education, Dr. Kam's interests expanded into another field: law. Driven by a desire to better understand governance, ethics, and professional practice, he earned a Juris Doctor from the City University of Hong Kong and completed professional legal training in Australia. He was subsequently admitted as a lawyer to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.  

Although his legal admission was based on his legal qualifications and professional training, Dr. Kam believes his education at UMT played an important supporting role. "My studies at UMT developed my research, management, and communication skills," he said. "Those skills helped me approach legal and business matters from a more strategic perspective." 

Looking back, Dr. Kam sees education not as a series of degrees but as a tool for expanding opportunities and opening new professional pathways. 

His journey from education entrepreneur, to business researcher, and Australian lawyer demonstrates how lifelong learning can create unexpected possibilities. Rather than limiting himself to a single career path, he continued building new knowledge and skills, and applied each experience to the next stage of his professional development. 

Reflecting on his educational journey, Dr. Kam wanted to share some advice to his fellow UMT students. “Remain disciplined, curious, and resilient. Distance learning provides flexibility, but it also requires strong self-motivation and effective time management. There may be moments when work, family responsibilities, and academic deadlines become difficult to balance, but persistence is often what separates those who being a program from those who successfully complete it.”  

“Do not study only for a qualification. Try to connect every subject, assignment, and research project with your professional experience and future goals. The real value of education lies not only in the degree itself, but also in how it changes the way you think, make decisions, and contribute to your profession and community. It is never too late to continue learning or to pursue a new professional direction.”
