Our History
The University of Management and Technology (UMT) was founded by Dr. Yanping Chen and Dr. J. Davidson Frame in 1998 in Arlington VA. The State Council of Higher Education of Virgina (SCHEV) authorized UMT to name it as a university and to enroll students in 1998. SCHEV subsequently approved UMT to confer degrees in 2000. UMT obtained its institution accreditation from Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) in 2002 and has maintained DEAC institutional accreditation since.
Since its interception, UMT has built a strong global higher learning community through its online and distance education. Geographical boundaries do not limit UMT and its students, who reside in 50 states, the District of Columbia, 4 US territories of the United States, and 89 countries. As of 2025, UMT has provided various levels of education and training programs to over 24,000 students. Of these, more than 17,000 have earned their degrees at the associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels from the UMT.
UMT is ranked Forbes 500 Top Colleges in 2024-2025.
