Melanie Beasley

Suffolk, VA

Academic Engagement with Classmates and Faculty Added Depth to Online Learning

Melanie Beasley (BBA expected '24), a military veteran turned aspiring HR professional, found her educational match with the University of Management and Technology (UMT). Her journey with UMT began with an internet search; she was seeking a self-paced program that could accommodate her busy schedule.

Reflecting on her UMT experience, Melanie pointed out that the sense of community fostered by UMT's online academic discussion forums made her educational journey memorable. "I loved the engagement in the discussion forums—it felt like a real classroom experience. Connecting with professors and fellow students added depth to my learning," she remarked.

Melanie had pursued education at different schools before and found the scheduling of in-person classes too rigid and restrictive. It took her ten years to complete the associate degree due to her military life and was arduous. The UMT self-paced, online, 11-week terms helped Melanie stay on course and achieve her goal of receiving a Bachelor's degree in just a little over a year. "The 11-week terms were just the right length. It gave me enough time to dive into the material without feeling overwhelmed," she added.

Finally, the flexibility of self-paced programs allowed Melanie to tailor her education to her schedule, ensuring she could balance her coursework with other responsibilities. "UMT offered exactly what I needed—a self-paced structure that fit into my everyday life," Melanie shared.

Looking ahead, Melanie sees her UMT degree as a catalyst for her career aspirations. "Completing my degree will definitely boost my prospects in the business world, especially because I aim to pursue a career in HR," she expressed, emphasizing the career potential of her education. She also expressed plans to continue to a Master's degree after completing the Bachelor's.

In retrospect, Melanie's decision to choose UMT proved to be life changing. "UMT provided the support and flexibility I needed to succeed, unlike my previous educational experiences. Thanks to UMT, I was able to fast-track my degree and I look forward to embarking on a new chapter of my professional journey and continuing to my Master's degree," she concluded, reflecting on her journey with gratitude and satisfaction.

"Being able to engage with my fellow classmates and my professors in the online discussion forums felt like a real classroom experience. The online connection absolutely added to my learning and enjoyment of the courses."

Eric Thompson

Upper Marlboro, MD

Journey from Duty to Degree

Eric Thompson (ASCJ ’18, BSCJ ’19, MSCJ ‘20)'s educational journey with UMT was inspired by witnessing a co-worker working on UMT coursework.

For Eric, UMT wasn't merely a school; it stood out as an "AWESOME" institution. What caught his attention was the unique blend of a self-paced curriculum and an "AMAZING" book loan program. For someone balancing the demands of active duty, the flexibility to progress through courses at his own pace was a game-changer. The book loan program, which alleviated the financial burden of purchasing textbooks, was an added bonus that significantly eased his learning journey.

The impact of completing degrees at UMT rippled through Eric's military career. Achieving academic milestones while actively serving enhanced his competitiveness for promotions. His degrees, in conjunction with a strong military record, set him apart from his peers. As he transitioned into civilian life, the influence of his UMT education continued to resonate. Eric shared: "Obtaining my degrees while still serving on active duty had an impact on my military career because those degrees made me more competitive for promotion advancement. Now that I’ve retired, having a degree opens the pool for the amounts of jobs that deem me as 'highly qualified.'"

Reflecting on his UMT experience, Eric emphasized three key aspects that stood out: the self-paced nature of the programs, the invaluable book loan program, and the consistently responsive and professional staff. These elements collectively shaped an educational environment that catered to his unique needs and contributed to his success.

Grateful for discovering UMT, Eric shared valuable suggestions for enhancement. He emphasized the opportunity to extend UMT's accessibility to more service members and the importance of informing and attracting service members. In the realm of military duties, where schedules govern the pace of academic pursuits, UMT provides an ideal solution for efficiently achieving off-duty education. “The school is PERFECT for those military members who want to complete off-duty education. The majority of Marines that I know, it takes them on average about 15 years to complete their Bachelor’s degree because they have to fit it into their schedules depending on if their duty assignment would allow for school. The self-paced courses are a game-changer!” Eric remarked.

"UMT is not just a school; it's an AWESOME institution that understands the rhythm of military life. The self-paced courses and book loan program made education seamlessly blend with my service."

Vickie Miller wanted to go back to school while working full-time and raising a family. She tried and found that her busy schedule made it difficult for her to attend op-campus colleges. That is when she discovered the University of Management and Technology and enrolled in their Business Administration program.

Vickie got married after high school and had her first child at twenty-two. College seemed hopeless. She eventually ended up joining the service. Juggling between work, family, and school was difficult. While researching alternatives to on-campus colleges, Vickie discovered that UMT had a variety of flexible and user-friendly programs that would fit into her current profession and broaden her knowledge for advancement. She enrolled in the Business Administration program and graduated with her Associate's degree and further improved herself over the years with degrees in Public Administration and Engineering Management. Vickie was last enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program with a Project Management concentration. Vickie especially enjoyed the group discussions in courses so that she got to know her classmates. The knowledgeable and warm staff at UMT made the whole experience very pleasant.

Utilizing the skills and knowledge she learned from her degrees, Vickie was able to make good team decisions within the organization which enabled her to contribute to her current employer and career.

"I am sincerely thankful to the University of Management and Technology to broaden my area of knowledge and expertise. Those flexible and user-friendly programs turned my ambitious learning process into reality."

Karen R.J. White

Weare, NH

A full-time working adult and volunteer, I needed the schedule flexibility provided by distance learning

Dr. Karen White is Program Director and Senior Lecturer in Project Management at Granite State College in Rhode Island. She received a DBA at the University of Management and Technology. Her doctoral work was funded by a UMT scholarship issued through the Project Management Institute Education Foundation.

Karen’s achievements are substantial, ranging from a consultant in healthcare and project management, to a project management practitioner, to a college professor, to an author, to a cancer survivor, to an Army Reservist. She was awarded a BS in Information Systems (Northeastern University), an MS in Information Systems Management (Northeastern University School of Engineering), and a Doctor of Business Administration in Management (UMT).

Karen is particularly proud of her thought leadership contributions in two areas. First, as one of a handful of management practitioners who, years ago, recognized the value of implementing project management principles and practices in the healthcare arena. Second, as one of the first management experts to promote the use of agile practices employed in IT to manage all management efforts. She authored two books on the application of agile practices in project management (Agile Project Management: A Mandate for the 21st Century (2009); and Practical Project Management for the Agile Non-Profit (2013)).

Even as Karen earned a living as a consultant and educator, she dedicated a substantial portion of her time to volunteer service. Of particular note was her service to the Project Management Institute (PMI), which began in 1994 and continues today. As a PMI volunteer, she assumed several leadership roles that ultimately led her to be granted the award of PMI Fellow (2009) – one of only 40 people in a professional society of 600,000 people to be given this privilege. Karen is also proud of her volunteer service to various cancer-fighting causes over a twenty-year span.

"I am glad I was able to complete this degree studying with Dr. David Frame and Dr. Yanping Chen. Their respect for my existing knowledge, and how they shared their knowledge with me, made for a collegiate learning experience."
