Colin Harrison

Covington, LA

Leading with Courage: from the Front Lines to the Classroom

* For information on this incident, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_New_Orleans_truck_attack

Colin Harrison (MSCJ expected '25) is a law enforcement officer with over a decade of experience, a squad leader on his department's tactical team, and a ranger officer and honor guard member. He was already making a significant impact within his community, but he knew that to further his career—and his understanding of criminal justice—he needed to pursue higher education.

"When I found out that my department offered a 10% raise for having a master's degree, I started researching online programs," Colin shared. He found out about the University of Management and Technology (UMT) through his work's continued education resources. "UMT stood out to me immediately—they offered the exact degree I wanted: a criminal justice program with a homeland security emphasis. The reviews I found were excellent, the flexibility of the program was really appealing to me, and the tuition was very affordable."

Flexibility was important to Colin. Balancing his intense schedule and responsibilities made it impossible for him to pursue traditional schooling. "I liked that I could go at my own pace. I could finish a course, and a week later start the next. It made everything move faster without ever feeling rushed." Financial reason was another deciding factor. "The scholarship that I received made it even more affordable. UMT really gave me the best value for my money."

Not only was Colin's educational experience at UMT convenient, it also transformed his perspective on criminal justice. "I've been in law enforcement for over 11 years, but the way I view the field has grown so much thanks to the material I've studied. It's up-to-date, thought-provoking, and has provided new points of view I didn't consider before." With graduation on the horizon, he's not only looking forward to the financial benefits, but also to career advancement. "This is going to hopefully open up new paths for me."

Outside the classroom, Colin's professional life also has been demanding and meaningful. As a police officer, Colin was directly involved in the 2025 New Orleans terrorist attack on New Year's Day*. "A truck was driven down Bourbon Street, and I was almost hit," Colin recounted. In the chaos, he ran through gunfire to apprehend the assailant. "It was one of the most intense moments of my career." About two months later, he began a course that centered on terrorism and counterterrorism. "It was surreal,” he recalled. "Going through that experience and then learning about the theory gave me an entirely new perspective. It added depth to my understanding and helped me process the event in a meaningful way."

When asked what he appreciated most about his UMT experience, Colin didn't hesitate: "First, the staff was incredibly helpful—whenever I had questions, I'd get quick and clear responses. Second, the course material was excellent. And third, the ability to control my schedule made the whole process manageable and enjoyable."

Colin is proud of how far he's come and grateful for the journey he’s taken with UMT. "I've recommended UMT to so many people already. This has been a wonderful experience—I truly couldn’t have asked for more."

"UMT gave me the tools to grow as a leader, sharpen my perspective on criminal justice, and position myself for the next chapter in my career — while staying true to my mission of protecting others."

Where Flexibility Fuels the Future

Boris Pettit (MBA expected '25, BBA '23) began his educational journey with the University of Management and Technology (UMT) when his coworker at the United States Air Force and good friend, Cristina Bennett, recommended the school and highlighted the self-paced structure of the programs. Boris was looking for a university that would help him prepare for retirement and the transition to civilian life without compromising any present aspect of his life; he found that UMT was just what he was looking for. "Cristina was already enrolled at UMT and had great things to say about the experience," Boris recalled. "She emphasized how flexible and self-paced the programs were, which really stood out to me as someone juggling multiple commitments."

Flexibility was the key. Boris needed an educational institution that could accommodate his busy schedule. The self-paced aspect particularly appealed to him, as it allows individuals with demanding jobs to balance work, family, and education successfully. "I was able to study at my own speed while still dedicating enough time to other commitments in my life," he shared.

As the completion of his MBA degree approaches, Boris believes his degrees will significantly impact and change his life and career. "I believe my degrees will provide me with the knowledge and skills to advance my professional journey," Boris expressed. "With the knowledge I learned in both programs, I will be able to enhance my qualifications, which will make me more competitive in the job market. Hopefully it opens more career opportunities, too." He also believes that his academic achievements will boost his confidence and act as a steppingstone towards achieving his long-term career goals.

One of the most rewarding aspects of his UMT experience has been the practical, relevant curriculum. "The courses are well-structured and provide real-world applications, equipping me with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in my career while making my educational journey both engaging and rewarding." He applied this learning directly to his role in the Air Force, working on a project focused on optimizing operational processes. "By implementing the management and analytical skills I acquired through my coursework, I not only improved the project efficiency within my team but also demonstrated the practical application of my studies."

His educational journey wasn't without its obstacles. To stay on track, Boris developed strong time-management strategies and leaned into UMT's supportive learning community. "I developed a structured schedule by mapping out my days, setting priorities, and finding study windows that worked around my schedule – like early mornings or late evenings," he explained, "I also reached out to my professors and peers whenever I needed assistance or clarification on course material. The supportive community at UMT provided guidance and encouragement, which helped me stay motivated." To manage stress, he also incorporated regular physical activity and mindfulness into his routine.

While studying at UMT, Boris praised the flexibility of the programs, the practical and relevant curriculum, and the supportive faculty and community of students. "Engaging with the faculty and a diverse group of peers has provided me with valuable insights and connections," Boris explained.

With the completion of his master's degree in sight, Boris is deeply thankful for his experience at UMT. "Attending UMT has been instrumental in preparing me to achieve my personal and professional goals as I transition from military to civilian life seamlessly. The experience allowed me to learn and gain the confidence needed to embark on a new chapter without missing a beat."

"At UMT, I never felt like I was going through this journey alone—the encouragement from both faculty and fellow students created a strong sense of community that lifted me through every challenge and reminded me that success is always within reach. His story is one of persistence, personal growth, and the invaluable support of an educational institution that understands the needs of its students.

However, from the moment he joined UMT, he was pleasantly surprised by the ease with which UMT made education accessible. "UMT made going to school easier," he recalls. One standout feature was UMT's provision of course textbooks, which was a significant aid in his learning journey.

He acknowledges, "You guys are very accommodating because I should have finished a long time ago." Christopher's decision to pursue higher education was inspired by a testimonial from a trusted work colleague. His coworker, Scott Heck, shared his experience of applying to go back to school with the University of Management and Technology (UMT), and Christopher saw an opportunity to follow in his footsteps. "Scott's recommendation of UMT led me to apply for my bachelor's degree, and now I plan to continue on to a master's as well," he shared.

The admissions counselor I worked with was great, making everything smooth and stress-free. Choosing UMT was a no-brainer," he said.

"Because of admission backlogs at other universities during COVID, I applied to UMT," Dominique explained. "I really appreciated the prompt communication and support from UMT, something I didn't experience elsewhere at that time."

The flexibility of UMT's self-paced courses and the supportive environment were other key factors in his decision. "If I had a bad day at work, I didn't feel pressured to meet rigid deadlines," he expressed. "I could take my time and complete my work when I was ready." Outside of his studies, Dominique took pride in being a supportive husband and father while earning his degree. Unlike many students who face challenges during their academic journeys alone, he credited UMT's continuous support for helping him stay on track. John Rogers

Lorton, VA

Paving Paths to Success with UMT's Flexible Pathways

John Rogers' (BSIT '23, MSIT '24) journey toward earning a college degree took him through several schools, but it wasn't until a recommendation from his sister, Qwentavia White, that he found the right fit at the University of Management and Technology (UMT). Qwentavia had taken courses at UMT herself and encouraged John to try it out. "My sister recommended UMT after she had a great experience with the classes. I'd tried a few other schools, but after taking my first few courses at UMT, I knew I wanted to stay and complete my degree," John shared.

Balancing a full-time job in the IT field, John found the flexibility and unique structure of UMT's programs to be the key factors in his decision to continue. "I liked that the semesters were 11-weeks long, and there weren't strict deadlines for assignments and exams," he explained. This setup allowed him to maintain his career while working toward his degree at a pace that worked best for him. However, adjusting to UMT's more flexible format did come with some initial challenges, as John was used to schools with strict weekly deadlines. "It took some getting used to," he admitted, "but once I realized I could manage my own pace and still meet the deadlines, the stress eased significantly."

John also found the faculty at UMT to be a standout feature of his experience. Whether reaching out through the student portal or over the phone, he always received timely and helpful responses. "The faculty were extremely helpful, and they always got back to me quickly, no matter how I contacted them," John said.

With his Bachelor's and Master's degree completed, John is hopeful that his education will unlock new opportunities in Information Technology or lead to a promotion within his current role. "Either path would be a great step forward for me professionally," he said, noting that his education with UMT has contributed to his professional growth.

Now, with his Master's degree in hand, John is grateful for the opportunity to learn in a less pressured environment. "It's been a lot less stressful than the other colleges I attended. UMT was definitely the right choice for me," he reflected.

"UMT gave me the flexibility I needed to balance my busy life while continuing my education. With their 100% online courses, I could log in on my own time, which made all the difference. Even during personal challenges, I was still able to keep up with my studies. I'm grateful for the experience and hopeful that it will open new doors for me professionally."

Antonio Kiefer

Emory, TX

From High School Dropout to Earning Multiple Degrees

Antonio Kiefer (MSM expected '25, MSHS '21, MSCJ '20, BSCJ '21, ASCJ '10)'s education journey, from being a high school dropout to earning multiple degrees, is a testament to his resilience, determination, and the impact of the University of Management and Technology (UMT).

His pursuit of higher education began while he was on Active Duty in 2009. Encouraged by fellow service members who had successfully balanced their studies with military life, he decided to explore UMT's programs. "Other online colleges I had tried were harder to navigate and didn't fit my schedule," Antonio recalled. "Being Active Duty, deployed, married, and raising my children made it challenging, but UMT made it possible."

Antonio, who lost his parents at a young age and left high school at 15 to work and support himself, was determined to rewrite his future after he and his wife experienced the heartbreaking loss of a pregnancy. After earning his high school diploma online at the age of 23, he began his college journey. However, the road wasn't always smooth. In 2013, after 10 years of service and 3 deployments to Afghanistan, Antonio was medically retired from the U.S. Navy. "I faced a lot of medical challenges and felt lost after retirement," he shared. "But thanks to UMT and my degree in criminal justice, I was able to secure a new job immediately." In March 2013, just one month after retiring, Antonio was hired by the State of Texas as a U.S. Marshal, working in the Office of Violent Sex Offender Management (OVSOM). His criminal justice degree laid the foundation for his new career, and his passion for learning didn't stop there. Over the years, he went on to earn three master's degrees in multiple fields.

Antonio praised the exceptional support he received from the university, noting how the communication and guidance from UMT personnel made the registration process seamless. He also appreciated the user-friendly platform, which provided easy access to coursework and resources, making studying more manageable. Most importantly, the flexibility of the program allowed him to complete assignments and exams at his own pace, enabling him to balance his studies with the demands of military service and family life.

Antonio also acknowledges the evolution of UMT's academic processes over the years to better serve students. "When I started in 2009, most exams and assignments had to be submitted via mail, email, or fax—it was very time-consuming. Since then, UMT has come leaps and bounds further than I could have Imagined 15 years ago, making it easier for students to succeed."

His extraordinary journey is best summarized in his own words: "I grew up extremely poor, lost my parents as a kid, and had to drop out of school to survive. I worked at Walmart from 14 to 21 and only joined the military after my wife and I lost our pregnancy. I had no diploma, no clear career path, and many unforeseen obstacles, but thanks to the U.S. Navy and UMT, I came home to a great career and never had to beg for a job again."

"I can proudly call myself a college graduate. Thanks to the full support of my wonderful wife and two daughters, one of which is currently serving in the U.S. Airforce, stationed in Washington DC; I was able to focus on my education. Thank you, UMT, for giving me the opportunity to improve my life."

Shaping a Better Future with Insights from UMT's DBA Program

Thanks to the University of Management and Technology's (UMT) DBA program, I am equipped with the systematic knowledge and passionate mindset that is necessary to excel as a business leader in today's environment. This academic journey has not only deepened my understanding of business principles but has also reinforced my commitment to integrating what I learned into corporate strategies. With the knowledge I gained, I can now draw upon the insights and methodology from my studies to lead and foster a culture of sustainability throughout the rest of my career.

After graduating from the DBA program, I worked as a marketing director for a listed security firm, and I recognized the profound impact a well-structured charitable foundation could have on both corporate culture and community welfare. While working there, I established a foundation designed not just for philanthropy, but also to embed ESG (Environmental Social and Governance) principles into the firm's operations. This foundation aligned corporate resources with meaningful social impact, which proved beneficial for both reputation and community welfare.

The UMT DBA program's framework for planning and executing initiatives particularly resonates with ESG values. I directly applied these insights to the foundation, meticulously designed its operations based on the strategic concepts I was learning. For example, by aligning charitable activities with a broader ESG strategy, I effectively set objectives, defined key performance indicators, and monitored progress toward sustainability goals. This structured approach maximized our impact and reinforced our commitment to corporate governance and sustainability.

Now, as the Chief ESG Controller of a publicly listed company in Hong Kong, I draw upon the insights and methodologies gained from the UMT DBA program to lead in the ESG practices and brand innovation. My focus extends beyond compliance to fostering a culture of sustainability that aligns with the company's long-term vision and social responsibilities.

Additionally, my involvement with the senior management committee at the Federation of Hong Kong Industries allowed me to utilize my academic background to launch an innovative ESG certification program in 2023. This initiative was a testament to my dedication to promoting sustainable business practices across various sectors. The certification program provided companies with a system to assess and enhance their sustainability performance, enabling them to not only meet, but exceed regulatory standards.

Through my steadfast dedication to ESG principles and social impact, I hope to use my leadership skills to drive positive changes within organizations and communities. The UMT DBA program has been instrumental in shaping my approach and equipping me with the tools and knowledge necessary to inspire others to embrace sustainability.

NOTE: Navis Or is a UMT DBA ('21) graduate.

"The DBA program at UMT has given me the knowledge, confidence, and strategic perspective to lead ESG business practices with purpose, fostering sustainability and driving impactful changes in both corporate practices and community engagement."

Bridging the Gap from Military Service to Civilian Leadership

For Lorenzo Brisco (ASCJ '25, ASIT '24, ASHS '23, MSM '23, MBA '22, BBA '18), education was a steppingstone for leveraging his military leadership skills into a successful civilian career. While serving in the U.S. Navy, Lorenzo wanted a program that aligned with his goals, honored his military experience, and provided the flexibility to balance education with his professional responsibilities. Referred by his childhood best friend and Navy colleague, Corey Valentine, Lorenzo discovered the University of Management and Technology (UMT).

Lorenzo's decision to choose UMT was driven by UMT's reputation for supporting military professionals and veterans in achieving their educational goals. “UMT's credit transfer policies recognized the skills I gained during my 22 years in the Navy, and their practical, career-focused curriculum aligned with my professional goals,” he explained. The flexibility of UMT's online programs allowed Lorenzo to continue his education without disrupting his military service or personal commitments. He also appreciated the supportive environment UMT offered to veterans. “Their military-friendly policies made it easier to progress toward my degree and feel valued for my experiences.”

Balancing coursework with the demands of active-duty service was no small task. “Frequent travel and a demanding workload made it difficult to maintain a consistent study schedule,” Lorenzo recalled. But with UMT's flexible format and his own time-management skills, homed in the Navy, he found a way to stay on track. “I set clear goals, prioritized tasks, and stayed disciplined.”

For Lorenzo, UMT provided a direct link between academic theory and professional practice. “I applied project management principles learned in class to streamline operational procedures in a team setting, improving efficiency and mission readiness,” he explains. His studies also enriched his leadership development, “I focused on leadership development through case studies and projects, which helped me mentor junior team members effectively,” he shares.

Completing his degrees at UMT has had a significant impact on Lorenzo's life and career. “My Navy leadership and operational skills, combined with my academic credentials, have positioned me for strategic leadership roles in the civilian sectors,” he said. “The degrees have made me a more competitive candidate in the job market, but more importantly, it's given me the confidence to pursue new opportunities,” Lorenzo reflected.

Lorenzo is deeply appreciative of his time at UMT. “I want to thank UMT for providing an education that respects the unique needs of military professionals while equipping us for success. They've given me the confidence to take my career to the next level.”

"UMT provided me with the tools, flexibility, and support to successfully transition from military service to civilian leadership. Their recognition of my Navy experience and career-focused education gave me the confidence to pursue new opportunities and build a future I'm proud of."

Janice Bode

Kathleen, GA

Gaining Confidence and Career Growth Through Education

When Janice Bode (ABA expected '25) decided to continue her education, it was driven by a desire to grow both personally and professionally. Working in the marketing department of a large real estate company, Janice was looking for a school who could help expand her current knowledge and skillset. Encouraged by her husband, Cody Moore, who is also a student at the University of Management and Technology (UMT), Janice explored UMT's offerings. “My husband suggested UMT, and I'm so glad he did,” she shared.

After researching UMT, Janice decided to enroll based on the school's flexibility and affordability. “I liked that the program worked with my schedule and was completely online,” she explained. “The tuition was very affordable, and I could use financial aid without having to take out student loans.”

The ability to study on her own was essential for Janice. “I liked that I could log in and complete my coursework at my own pace,” she said. “Whether it was starting and stopping coursework or pausing and coming back to exams, the flexibility was exactly what I needed.”

Janice also appreciated UMT's transparent and user-friendly platform. “I expected college systems to be difficult to navigate, but UMT's platform was so easy to use. Everything I needed was in one place with no hidden tabs, and it was all very clear and easy to access—from the ILPs that outlined the courses I need to take to the coursework itself,” Janice said.

Although balancing her studies with work was challenging, Janice found a new passion for writing and an unexpected interest in criminal justice courses; she's discovered new areas of learning that she hadn't considered before. “I enjoyed broadening my horizons with the writing courses, and the criminal justice courses were fascinating. They introduced me to subjects I've never explored before.” One of her most significant challenges was her math course. “Math has always been tricky for me,” she admitted. “Teaching myself as I went along was tough, but I pushed through and appreciated that if I could retake exams if needed.”

Janice's time at UMT has instilled confidence in her abilities and her future. “I never thought about how continuing my education could help in my current field until I enrolled at UMT,” she reflected. “Now, I see the possibilities, and I plan to continue to my Bachelor's degree to broaden my knowledge even further.”

Her message to others considering returning to school is simple: “Don't doubt yourself. The opportunity to learn and grow is worth it, and UMT makes it possible to achieve your goals, even with a busy life.”

"Continuing my education at UMT has opened doors I never imagined. The flexibility, affordability, and support have not only strengthened my confidence, but also expanded my horizons. UMT has shown me that it's never too late to invest in your growth and pursue new opportunities."

Ivan Scantlebury

Using the Power of Education to Build a Brighter Future

Ivan Scantlebury's (BSCJ '24) path toward higher education started with one goal in mind: to gain the skills and knowledge in criminal justice that would advance his career and increase his marketability in a competitive job market. While interning with the Kansas Department of Corrections in the Kansas City, Kansas Parole Officer Division, Ivan was encouraged by a professional organization (Fraternal Order of Police) to explore the University of Management and Technology (UMT). “After looking UMT up online, I was drawn to their discounted tuition rates and the 100% online programs,” Ivan shared.

What set UMT apart for Ivan was the affordability, the ease of the admissions process, and the ability to transfer credits seamlessly. “It wasn't as expensive as other schools, and they accepted all my prior credits, including those from professional training. That made the decision to choose UMT a no-brainer,” he said. He also appreciated the exceptional support he received during the admissions process. “My admissions counselor went above and beyond to answer my questions. The process was smooth, and I felt supported from the start.”

For Ivan, the online format was essential in balancing his professional and academic commitments. UMT's courses were not only convenient but also practical and relevant. “The courses were incredibly informative and aligned closely with what’s happening in the field of criminal justice,” Ivan noted.

Despite facing struggles with job security and income during his studies, Ivan remained steadfast in his pursuit of a degree. He viewed his education as a critical steppingstone toward a brighter future. “With my degree, I'm hoping to secure better job opportunities in the public safety sector. It'll qualify me for positions that were previously out of reach, making me more marketable in the job market and, hopefully, provide the financial security I've been working toward,” he said.

Reflecting on his time at UMT, Ivan expressed gratitude for the experience and the personal growth it brought. “I've had a tough journey with college in the past, but UMT gave me the opportunity to succeed,” he said.

His message to others is simple but powerful: “Don't let anyone tell you that you can't accomplish something. You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it.”

"UMT gave me the tools and confidence to turn challenges into opportunities. No matter where you start, success is possible if you stay determined and believe in yourself."

Hentrick Eveluck

Barrigada, GU

Building Bridges Through Project Management

Hentrick M Eveluck (GCPM '24) was born and raised on a remote and tiny island called Oneop. The island has an estimated land area of 1.5 sq. kilometers - or about 0.58 sq. miles - and less than 1,000 people in the population. Oneop is part of the State of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), a developing sovereign island nation geographically located in the western pacific region.

Years after he earned his master's degrees in business and public administration in 2003, Hentrick began to see and appreciate the values and needs of project management. Specifically, how it relates to the development efforts of Micronesia - socially and economically. Currently, there are several development projects in Micronesia from the international organization's community, such as: the World Bank, the ADB, EU, and the UN. This also includes the U.S. government through the Compact of Free Association, which helps with development in the Micronesian island nations. The social and economic development efforts in these vulnerable areas of the pacific are now compounded with the ongoing impacts of climate change.

Hentrick became a successful grant proposal writer in Guam (USA), which enhanced his interest in project management. He became a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and won a prestigious student award in 2019 at the PMI Global Conference in Philadelphia, PA. His goal is to become a certified PMP. In December 2024, he completed the Graduate Certificate in Project Management at the University of Management and Technology (UMT). These degrees and accomplishments are intended to pave his way toward starting his ultimate goal: to get a doctoral degree in business administration with an emphasis in project management. Alternatively, he aspires to become a college professor, and he wants to teach project, program, or portfolio management.

"Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the need for effective development strategies. UMT's Graduate Certificate in Project Management has equipped me with the skills to contribute to meaningful social and economic progress in vulnerable regions while advancing my professional journey toward becoming a PMP and beyond."

Blending Military Dedication with Academic Achievement and Real-World Knowledge

For Anthony Hamlin (ECIT expected '25, PMP Essentials '24, BBA '20, ABA '17), the University of Management and Technology (UMT) offered the flexibility and relevance he needed to pursue his academic goals while balancing the demands of military life. Initially referred by a friend, Anthony's journey with UMT began with a need for an education that could accommodate his unpredictable schedule. "The self-paced courses fit perfectly with my military responsibilities, making UMT the right choice for me to continue my education," he explained.

Balancing a military career with education wasn't always easy. At times, work commitments threatened to pull him away from his studies. But with determination and careful time management, Anthony overcame these challenges.

What Anthony appreciated the most was the UMT's program design, which empowered him to take charge of his education on his own terms. As a service member, days are often long and schedules can be uncertain, but UMT's structure made it possible for him to stay on track. "Being able to log in and complete coursework when I had the time was amazing," he noted. This adaptability allowed him to keep up with his studies, even when his military responsibilities intensified.

Completing a certificate in IT has been more than an academic achievement for Anthony; it's an investment in his future. "This degree is in the area I want to work in, and the courses have kept me up to date with the latest trends and terminology in the field," he shared.

In addition to his degree programs, Anthony also completed UMT's PMP Essentials program to prepare for the PMP exam. The knowledge he gained was both practical and actionable, enabling him to excel in his professional role. He applied what he learned to his work, particularly leveraging concepts from the PMP coursework. The impact was immediate and significant, as the curriculum provided practical, hands-on skills that Anthony found immediately applicable to his work.

Anthony also found the discussion boards in his courses engaging and valuable. "I was able to bounce ideas off my classmates and expand my understanding of the material," he said. These discussions were more than just academic exercises; they enriched his learning experiences and helped him connect with peers and gain diverse perspectives.

As Anthony approaches graduation, he looks back with pride at what he has accomplished and forward with excitement for what lies ahead. His education at UMT has not only equipped him with the technical skills and knowledge needed for the competitive field of IT but has also reinforced his confidence and resilience. "UMT's program didn't just fit my lifestyle; it prepared me for what's next," he said.

"UMT's flexible, self-paced structure allowed me to manage my military schedule while staying on track with my studies. The program not only equipped me with the technical skills I need for my career but also reinforced my confidence and resilience for the future."

"The self-paced nature of the courses and the variety of programs they offered made it an easy choice."

Balancing work, life, and academics was no small feat for Charles, who served 22 years in active duty and was a senior enlisted leader when he started the program. Deployments often disrupted his studies, and transitioning out of the military in 2022 brought its own set of challenges. Yet, UMT's flexible and supportive structure helped him stay on track. "What drew me to UMT was how accommodating they were," he said. "The ability to adjust my coursework to fit my unpredictable schedule, and even take breaks when life got overwhelming, made all the difference." This adaptability allowed Charles to pursue his education steadily over the years.

Charles's education at UMT has had a profound impact on his career trajectory. After retiring from the military, he secured a position as an IT Project Manager, where he regularly applies the knowledge gained from his coursework. "My degree gave me the qualifications I needed to work as an IT project manager," he explained. "During job interviews, I was able to demonstrate the skills I gained at UMT, and my current coursework continues to align directly with my job."

Charles found insightful and constructive feedback provided by instructors, particularly in the master's program, impactful and valuable. "The feedback wasn't just about grades—it was meaningful and added real value to my learning," he shared.

In addition to valuable instruction, Charles appreciated the program's affordability and flexibility. These elements contributed to his consistent choice to remain with UMT for both his undergraduate and graduate studies, a decision that employers noticed. "The fact that I stayed with the same school for both degrees showed my dedication, which resonated with employers, " he said with pride.

Besides advancing his career, Charles’s experience at UMT has inspired him to recommend the program to his colleagues and even his employers. “The coursework directly aligns with what I do every day,” he said.

Looking back, Charles attributes much of his academic and professional progress to UMT’s unwavering support and flexibility. With his master's degree nearly complete and the tools he's gained, Charles is ready to continue advancing in his career while inspiring others to pursue their goals.

Alvin Lal

Temecula, CA

Turning Challenges into Opportunities for Growth and Future Success

Alvin Lal's (MSIT expected '25, BSIT '24, ASCS '06) journey toward earning his degree has been one of endurance and growth. His story began in 2006, when, as a transitioning Navy veteran, he discovered the University of Management and Technology (UMT) through the Education Center.

Alvin chose UMT because of its accessible online programs and supportive admissions process. "Everyone was awesome. Nothing was complicated, and it was easy to get started," he recalled. With the convenience of completing and submitting documents online and a seamless integration of using GI Bill benefits and then FSA, he found it easy to continue his studies at UMT.

As Alvin progressed through his program, he recognized how much his education would impact his career in Information Technology (IT). "In the IT world, it’s all about experience," Alvin explained. "The subjects I learned really helped me improve my IT knowledge and skills." He’s also hopeful that earning his degree from UMT will pave the way for him to advance into management roles. "Getting my Bachelor's and eventually my Master's will help me get a management-level position," he added with optimism.

The convenience of doing everything online, coupled with the flexibility to work at his own pace, gave Alvin the freedom to balance his education with other aspects of his life, including his numerous volunteer activities. While studying, Alvin volunteered extensively in his community; he dedicated 30 hours a week to coaching club soccer, refereed five games weekly, and even served on a commissioner board. He also volunteered at a local children’s hospital in the cardiology department. His motivation for this work is deeply personal—his son is on the waiting list for a heart transplant. "I volunteer with the kids for fun activities; it's something that means a lot to me," Alvin shared.

Despite his many successes, Alvin’s academic journey wasn't without challenges. "The biggest challenge wasn't during school—it was the personal events I had to overcome," he reflected. For years, he regretted not finishing his degree; despite knowing he was capable of the coursework. In 2024, Alvin made the decision to return to UMT to finish what he started. "Coming back to school helped bring some focus back into my life," he said with gratitude.

"Returning to UMT allowed me to not only complete my degree, but also regain focus in my life. The flexibility, supportive staff, and impact on my career made it all worthwhile."

Jessica Mattox

Finding a Balance Between Military Duties and Education

Jessica Mattox (BSHS '24, ASHS '17) was searching for a school with a simple yet critical need: flexibility. As an active-duty military member, Jessica required a school that could accommodate her demanding schedule. "I was looking for a school that was flexible with my military schedule. I came across UMT during my research," she shared.

Jessica's demanding military duties often made balancing education a challenge. "At one point, I was a drill sergeant, which came with a crazy schedule. It was 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., seven days a week," she recalled. With such intense hours, finding a school that could accommodate her was essential. After enrolling in her first courses, Jessica quickly realized that UMT was the perfect fit for her.

"I loved being able to go at my own pace. The setup was easy to navigate, and the classes were easy to understand," Jessica explained. For someone balancing military service and education, UMT's streamlined system and the freedom to work on her own terms made a huge difference.

Throughout her studies, Jessica praised the flexibility of the courses, as well as her professors' skill and insight. "I cannot stress enough how important the flexibility was for me," she said. Jessica valued the availability and responsiveness of the instructors, noting that, "I was always able to contact the instructor for assistance and receive prompt responses." Also, the registration process at UMT was a highlight. "It was easy and straightforward compared to other schools I’ve attended," Jessica shared.

Even with UMT's flexibility, the life of a service member brings unique challenges. Jessica faced deployments where internet access was limited or nonexistent. "Sometimes I had no internet access, which is obviously a challenge when attending an online school. I was able to save course material to my computer so I could study without the internet and let my professors know what was going on." With her resourcefulness and UMT's support, Jessica was able to stay on track.

As Jessica completes her bachelor's degree, she reflects on how combining her hands-on, military experience in homeland security with her academic coursework has given her a more comprehensive view of the field. "It has made a big impact on me. I'm now able to combine my real-world homeland security experience with my 'classroom' homeland security experience. It's helped me see the field from different perspectives."

Her journey exemplifies resilience and determination, and Jessica is now prepared to leverage her education and experience to make a greater impact in her field.

"Finding a school that could work with my demanding military schedule was critical, and UMT provided exactly that. The flexibility to work at my own pace was invaluable, and the courses were easy to navigate and understand. Combining my real-world experience in homeland security with what I learned in the classroom has made a huge impact, allowing me to see the field from new perspectives."

Dorinzo Walters

Athens, AL

Empowering Students to Achieve Academic and Professional Excellence

At UMT, I had the honor and privilege of completing my Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration. I completed my BBA while on active duty and my MBA after retiring from military service. During my time on active duty, UMT offered flexibility to pursue my educational goals in very busy garrison (home station) settings and while deployed to combat environments.

When military missions and assignment due dates conflicted, I did not experience the stress that some of my peers at other universities faced. I knew UMT professors and staff would afford me the opportunity to complete classwork later, within reason, without impacting my GPA.

I was able to travel and complete my MBA in the top 15% of graduates, and be elected to membership in the Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society.

Today, I am a small business owner who provides services to Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries.

NOTE: Dorinzo Walters is a BBA (’19) and MBA (’24) graduate.

"After retiring, I was not sure if UMT would offer the same flexibility as it provided while I was serving on active duty. I am excited to say that not only did UMT offer the same level of flexibility, but it also provided challenging class materials relevant to real-world applications."

"Cody was starting his degree with UMT and recommended that I look into it," Brian shared. At the time, Brian was juggling the demands of work and a growing family, with his wife expecting their fourth child just a month after he enrolled in his BBA program.

Brian chose UMT primarily for its flexibility. "The flexibility in completing my work was a major reason I decided to enroll," he explained. He knew he needed a program that would allow him to balance school with the unpredictable demands of family life, and UMT's online platform provided exactly that. His educational journey wasn't without its challenges, but Brian's determination never wavered. "I had to complete my coursework while taking care of a newborn who was born three weeks early," he recalled. Balancing schoolwork with the responsibilities of a new baby was tough, but Brian managed to stay on track. "I took any time I had, even while holding my son, to put my nose to the grindstone," he added.

In the middle of his MBA program, life threw another curveball. Brian was offered a new job in Florida, prompting a cross-country move from Arizona with his family of six. Achieving Balance and Real-World Impact: Success in Family, Career, and Education

Eric Charlick (MPA '24), a dedicated law enforcement professional with a full-time job and a busy family life, embarked on his educational journey at the University of Management and Technology (UMT) after discovering the institution at a professional event. "I had the opportunity to speak with a UMT representative at their booth; they provided me with valuable information about the programs they offered," Eric shared. This initial encounter piqued his interest, leading him to look into UMT as a serious option for advancing his education.

One of the key factors that influenced Eric's decision to enroll was the support he received from UMT's Admissions office. "My Admission's counselor answered all of my questions and made me feel confident that UMT was the right fit," he recalled. This personal touch made UMT stand out among other schools he considered. Moreover, the flexibility of UMT's coursework was essential for Eric, who balances his studies with professional and family responsibilities, including raising his seven- and ten-year-old children. "I needed a program that wouldn’t require me to choose between furthering my education and family time while working full-time. UMT provided that balance," he explained.

As Eric pursued his Master of Public Administration (MPA), he soon recognized the degree's potential impact on his career. "I now have the qualification to apply for part-time college teaching jobs. It also gives me more credibility in my profession," he stated, expressing his excitement about the new opportunities that lay ahead. A notable application of his UMT learning came during discussions at work about whether to continue using a costly system that was failing to meet their needs. "I utilized what I learned in the project management class to educate the group on the 'sunk costs,' which ultimately helped the team realize that continuing to invest in the system wasn’t the best option. Ultimately, we decided not to renew the contract," Eric shared. This experience underscored the practical value of his education and how it directly influenced decision-making in his job.

Throughout his UMT experience, Eric appreciated several aspects of the program. "The feedback from the instructors was very helpful and assisted me in fully comprehending the material," he noted. He also found the UMT online learning platform, Moodle, to be user-friendly, enabling him to focus on his coursework without unnecessary distractions. Eric is grateful for the supportive environment UMT provided, allowing him to pursue his education without sacrificing his career or family life.

"Discovering UMT was a turning point for me. The supportive Admissions Counselor guided me through the process, and the flexible coursework allowed me to balance my studies with my family life. Obtaining my MPA not only enhances my credibility in my profession, but also opens doors for future opportunities, including part-time teaching. My education has already made a tangible impact at work, demonstrating the real-world applicability of what I’ve learned."

Journey from Duty to Degree

Eric Thompson (MSCJ '20, BSCJ '19, ASCJ '18)'s educational journey with UMT was inspired by witnessing a co-worker working on UMT coursework.

For Eric, UMT wasn't merely a school; it stood out as an "AWESOME" institution. What caught his attention was the unique blend of a self-paced curriculum and an "AMAZING" book loan program. His degrees, in conjunction with a strong military record, set him apart from his peers. As he transitioned into civilian life, the influence of his UMT education continued to resonate. Hoi Ying She

Hongkong, China

Personal and professional success and growth from UMT's affordable and quality DBA program which is recognized by the HK government

Hoi Ying She (DBA '22) is a driven and ambitious professional who was seeking a doctoral degree to enhance her academic credential and advance her career. After extensive research and consideration, she chose UMT's Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program, which is listed in the Hong Kong Education Bureau's "Non-local Higher and Professional Education Courses."

Hoi Ying was impressed with UMT's well-structured and flexible program that allowed her to balance her professional commitments while pursuing a doctoral degree. She was also drawn to UMT's affordable tuition fee, excellent administration support, and high graduation rate. The fact that UMT's DBA program was ranked #6 in the Top Online Doctoral Degrees in Business Administration for 2019 was the cherry on top for Hoi Ying.

During her time at UMT, she found the program to be practical, enabling her to connect her management experiences with academic knowledge to address complex management issues. At the same time, it taught her analytical research skills and developed critical thinking skills. The program also helped her to formulate better development goals and achieve better performance results in her professional life.

Hoi Ying's UMT experience was made even better by the guidance and support she received from her dissertation supervisor, Dr. Carey Cheung. Dr. Cheung was instrumental in helping Hoi Ying through the research process and was always available to provide knowledge and support.

In June 2022, Hoi Ying graduated from UMT with a DBA degree. She confirmed that the UMT DBA qualification could be assessed by The Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). Furthermore, her DBA qualification meets the standard of a local Doctoral Degree at Level 7 of the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework.

In November 2022, Dr. She presented her dissertation as a poster presentation in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Annual Conference in UK. The abstract of her dissertation is published in the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice (https://doi.org/10.1093/ijpp/riac089.058).

She was grateful for the entire UMT experience and believed that studying for a DBA at UMT not only elevated her knowledge and skills, but also changed her purpose in life.

"Studying the UMT DBA is a life-changing decision for me."
