Turning Pandemic Setbacks into Succes

For Dominique Collier (MSCS expected '25, MSIT '24, BSIT '22), when the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays and disorganization at other universities, he turned to the University of Management and Technology (UMT). He found an institution that not only welcomed him promptly but also provided the support he needed to succeed. "Because of admission backlogs at other universities during COVID, I applied to UMT," Dominique explained. "I really appreciated the prompt communication and support from UMT, something I didn't experience elsewhere at that time."

The flexibility of UMT's self-paced courses and the supportive environment were other key factors in his decision. "If I had a bad day at work, I didn't feel pressured to meet rigid deadlines," he expressed. "I could take my time and complete my work when I was ready." Additionally, whenever he faced any issues with assignments or exams, UMT instructors and the student services department were quick to provide guidance and solutions.

This flexible and supportive learning environment helped Dominique succeed. His academic journey at UMT contributed to his career advancement, leading him to a new position as an enterprise architect manager.

As Dominique nears the completion of his second master's degree, he pointed out three major factors that made his experience at UMT stand out: easy access to course materials, a compassionate and supportive staff, and the ability to balance real-life responsibilities with his studies.

Outside of his studies, Dominique took pride in being a supportive husband and father while earning his degree. Unlike many students who face challenges during their academic journeys alone, he credited UMT's continuous support for helping him stay on track. "My student advisor always checked in, ensuring I was on top of my assignments. Their support prevented any challenges from becoming potential obstacles," he said.

Now, he looks forward to celebrating his achievements at commencement and reconnecting with the faculty and staff who played a vital role in his journey. "I can't wait to finish my second master's with UMT and meet everyone at graduation," he said with enthusiasm.

"The COVID-19 made my college plans difficult, but UMT provided the support and flexibility I needed to keep moving forward. Their self-paced programs and dedicated staff made it possible for me to balance work, family, and education—ultimately helping me advance my career."
