University of Management and Technology Celebrates 20
Years
ARLINGTON, Virginia, April 12, 2018
On January 28, 2018, the University of Management and Technology celebrated its 20th anniversary. When we began delivering education programs in 1998, online academic courses were a novelty. With an aspiration to deliver higher education globally across national boundaries, UMT did more than just offer courses: We were one of the first schools in the United States to offer online degrees. Coincidentally, a new company located just a few miles from us also began operations in 1998 – Blackboard.com. UMT was one of the first users of the Blackboard learning platform, which became a dominant platform as online education experienced explosive growth. Today, online education is a standard offering at nearly all colleges and universities in the United States, but in 1998, schools with online programs were a lonely bunch.
When we opened our university doors to students in 1998, we offered just two degrees: an MBA degree and an MS in Project Management. Today, we offer undergraduate degrees in 18 disciplines (at the associates/bachelor levels), masters degrees in 16 disciplines, and a doctoral degree. In our first semester of operation, we had only seven students. As of today, UMT has built a strong global higher learning community through its online and distance education programs, with students located in 50 states, the District of Columbia, 4 US territories of the United States, and 78 countries worldwide. UMT has provided various levels of education offerings to 23,750 students. Of these, 12,600 have earned their degrees from UMT.
As UMT goes forward, we are committed to continuing our tradition that focuses on being innovative, student-centric, academically excellent, and standing at the forefront of change in education. We strive to make higher education accessible and affordable. We are proud to say that UMT has not raised its tuition since the day it was founded. Ultimately, a university lives through its students, and that is certainly the case here. We offer thanks to you — our students and alumni — as well as to our faculty and staff. We are proud of what you have achieved — your accomplishments are the best rewards you can offer your alma mater.
