Credit Transfer Policy
Purpose
The University of Management and Technology (UMT) awards transfer credit and Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) credit to recognize verified college-level learning while maintaining academic integrity, consistency, and program quality.
Transfer Credit
UMT may accept transfer credit from regionally or nationally accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or comparable international authorities. Transfer credit is evaluated using published criteria and applied consistently based on course level, content, rigor, learning outcomes, and applicability to the student's program. Transfer credit decisions are not denied solely on the basis of the sending institution's type or source of accreditation.
Minimum Grades
Undergraduate coursework must be completed with a minimum grade of C (2.0). Graduate coursework must be completed with a minimum grade of B (3.0).
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
PLA evaluates documented college-level learning acquired outside a traditional academic setting. Academic credit is awarded only for demonstrated learning aligned with specific course or program learning outcomes, not for experience alone or time spent. Credit determinations are made by qualified faculty or appropriate subject-matter experts using published academic criteria.
Eligible PLA Sources
PLA may include industry-recognized certifications, military education and training evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE) or NCCRS, professional or corporate training, and other formally evaluated learning. Work experience alone does not earn academic credit; however, course substitution without credit may be approved when learning outcomes are met.
Credit Limits
Undergraduate programs may accept up to 75% of total program credits in transfer. Credit awarded for PLA, experiential, or equivalent learning is limited to a maximum of 25% of total undergraduate program credits, in compliance with DEAC requirements. Within overall limits, ACE-evaluated credit is limited to 15 credits for associate degree programs and 30 credits for bachelor's degree programs. Graduate programs may accept up to 50% of total credits for master's programs and up to 15% (maximum 9 credits) for the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program.
Fees and Documentation
UMT may charge a non-refundable evaluation fee based on services performed. Documentation supporting each transfer or PLA credit decision is maintained in the student's academic record. Approved credit is recorded and transcribed with appropriate notation.
Review and Appeals
Students receive written notification of all transfer and PLA decisions. Students may submit a written appeal within 30 days of notification. Appeal decisions are final.
Transferability Disclaimer
Acceptance of transfer or PLA credit by another institution is at that institution's discretion. UMT cannot guarantee acceptance of credits by other institutions.
Policy Review
This policy is reviewed periodically to ensure continued compliance with accreditation standards, equity, and institutional effectiveness.
