Academic Advising

Administrators, faculty, and staff are available for student advising during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Students may request advising by e-mail, telephone, or post. All faculty members post and maintain regular office hours, at which times they are available to telephone consultation. Typically, all inquiries are answered by the close of next business day.

Academic and Calendar Years

UMT’s academic year is from October to June. The university’s calendar year is from January to December. UMT offers courses during its summer semester from July to September to accommodate students with diverse study schedules and needs.

Academic Ethics

The university requires that its members, administrators, staff, faculty and students conduct themselves with honesty and integrity and to work together collegially.

Academic Integrity and Plagiarism

Academic Integrity

All students are expected to conduct themselves with the utmost integrity at all times. Students are required to:

  • Complete course work on their own unless otherwise directed by their instructors;
  • Properly cite all referenced works that are used to complete assignments;
  • Be truthful in all communications with fellow students and UMT faculty and staff;
  • Abide by UMT Policies, as presented in the catalog and website; and
  • Respect UMT’s ownership of all course materials that are provided.

Any breach of the above conditions may result in immediate dismissal of the student or other disciplinary action as may be determined appropriate. Disciplinary decisions are solely at the discretion of Academic Dean and President and are final.

Plagiarism

Students who submit written work to the University are responsible for ensuring that the work is their own. If they receive help in any way, they must acknowledge the help by providing an accurate and complete citation. Failure to provide a citation is plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious academic breach of conduct, whether by accident or deliberately.

The University requires instructors to assign a grade of F for a work that has evidence of plagiarism. The decision to allow a student to submit a new assignment or to rework the old assignment is the instructor’s. Typically, the syllabus will indicate how plagiarism will be handled.

Refer to UMT Student Handbook for basic rules on how to avoid plagiarism.

Admission Policy

Undergraduate Programs

Applicants to the associate’s degree program must have a high school diploma or GED. Applicants to the associate’s degree program who have prior education at an appropriately accredited institution may transfer a maximum of 45 credit-hours towards the associate’s degree requirements.

The bachelor’s degree is a degree-completion program comprising 60 credit-hours of instruction at the upper level (junior and senior years). Students entering the bachelor’s degree program already will have completed a minimum of 60 credit-hours of college-level studies at the lower level (freshman and sophomore years), either at UMT or at another appropriately accredited institution.

To apply, please go to UMT Online Application.

There are no deadlines for applications, which are continually reviewed. Admission is granted on a rolling basis. Accepted students can enroll in any semester.

Applications are reviewed by an Admissions Committee. An interview may be required, although it is not necessary to complete an application. Original transcripts from post-secondary institutions which are not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Students will be notified of the admission decision within one month of submitting their applications.

Graduate Programs

Applicants for the MS and MBA programs must be graduates from accredited undergraduate programs. To apply, please go to UMT Online Application.

There are no deadlines for applications, which are continually reviewed. Admission is granted on a rolling basis. Accepted students can enroll at any time.

Applications will be reviewed by an Admissions Committee. An interview may be required, although it is not necessary to complete an application. Original transcripts from post-secondary institutions which are not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Students will be notified of the admission decision within one month of submitting their applications.

Academic Semesters

UMT’s Academic Calendar defines four semesters per year. Each semester’s duration is ten weeks. Final exams and term papers are due by the end of the eleventh week.

Credit Transfer Policy

Undergraduate Programs

For the associate’s degrees, no more than 45 hours may be transferred toward the degree. For the bachelor’s degrees, no more than 90 semester hours in total may be transferred. These limits are established by the Distance Education and Training Council accrediting body. In all courses offered for transfer credit, the applicant must have earned a grade of “C” or better at an appropriately accredited institution. The decision to award transfer credit will be made by the Admissions Committee. The maximum credits based on relevant professional and work experience is 30 credits.

Graduate Programs

Up to 15 credit hours of graduate-level course work may be transferred to the MS degree program and up to 21 hours may be transferred to the MBA program. In all courses offered for transfer credit, the applicant must have earned a grade of “B” or better at an appropriately accredited institution. The decision to award transfer credit will be made by the Admissions Committee.

Continuous Enrollment

Once a student has entered into a degree program, he or she should be continuously enrolled and actively engaged in fulfilling the requirements for the degree each semester of the academic year until such time as the degree is conferred. A student is considered to be continuously enrolled when registered for courses or when otherwise engaged in the university’s study programs. Such engagement can include study abroad, attendance at another institution with prior approval to have credit transferred back to the student’s program of study, or completion of outstanding work in courses in which a grade of Incomplete was received. Continuous enrollment status is generally limited to one year. Students are requested to register for continuous enrollment for each semester during the academic year.

Course Waiver Policy

Some students may possess relevant professional and work experience, including formal and on-the-job training, that may qualify them to waive some courses. Students must submit a written petition requesting that specific courses be waived, offering a succinct justification for the waiver and providing documentary support for consideration by the Admissions Committee. The Admissions Committee will determine whether or not to waive courses in areas where students have demonstrated expertise, consistent with the accreditation standards of the DETC.

For the Undergraduate Division, up to four associate’s degree courses (12 credit-hours) can be waived. Up two core bachelor’s degree courses (6 credit-hours) can be waived and up to two courses (6 credit-hours) in the bachelor’s degree major area of concentration may be waived.

For the Graduate Division, up to two courses (6 credit-hours) may be waived.

Course waivers may be granted that include the provision of transfer credit. In some cases, the student must take substitute courses.

The Admissions Committee sends a written report to each student, informing him/her of its determination of waivers, transfer credits, and whether substitute courses must be taken.

Enrollment & Academic Semesters

Students may enroll at any time. All courses are eleven weeks’ duration. UMT’s Academic Calendar defines four academic semesters per year, with each semester being eleven weeks. Transcripts reflect the academic semester during which the student enrolled in the given courses

Extension in Time to Complete

Students who have their studies interrupted by extraordinary circumstances (e.g., military deployment or extended temporary duty, job relocation or loss, accident, birth of a child, death of a spouse, hospitalization or serious illness) may request an extension in time to complete their work. This request must be submitted to the Academic Dean in writing. Email or fax may be used. The Academic Dean will determine an appropriate extension in time to complete. A student’s course grades may automatically be converted to “F” as per the incomplete courses policy during this extension, but will be converted the earned grade without an adverse notice on the transcript when the work is completed.

Full-Time and Part-Time Status

Undergraduate Programs

Students enrolled in 9 or more credit hours per enrollment are considered full-time for associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs. Other students are considered as part-time.

Graduate Programs

Students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours per enrollment are considered full-time. Other students are considered as part-time.

Graduation and Commencement

A student must submit a Graduation Application Form to have the University consider him or her for graduation.

Only students who have satisfactorily completed all academic and financial requirements in the program will be considered for graduation. The University approves graduations in September, December, April and June.

The University holds its annual commencement in July. Students who graduated during the previous summer, fall, winter and spring semesters are encouraged to participate in the annual commencement. The graduation date on a student’s diploma is always the date that the university approves for his or her graduation. There is a $50 Graduation Processing Fee.

UMT recognizes sustained superlative scholarship among its bachelor's degree graduates. Students who complete a minimum of thirty (30) semester credit hours with UMT are automatically considered. Students whose UMT grade point average (GPA) is 3.85 or higher are accorded the distinction of graduating summa cum laude. For GPAs from 3.70 to 3.84, magna cum laude is granted; for GPAs from 3.55 to 3.69, cum laude is granted.

Incomplete Coursework

Students are expected to complete their courses within 11 weeks from their date of enrollment. If a student does not complete a given course with 11 weeks, an administrative grade of Incomplete will be recorded. If the coursework remains incomplete for ninety (90) days, the administrative grade is converted to Fail. These grades are recorded automatically, whether the student has received an extension in time to complete the coursework from the instructor or not. Student who need extensions beyond 90 days should submit request to Academic Dean through Student Services. Those given extended deadlines of more than 90 days by the Academic Dean will have a grade of Z recorded. When the coursework is completed, the administrative grades of I, F, or Z are replaced by the grade earned.

International Students

International students must be able to do graduate-level work in English. They must provide proof of their ability by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). They are encouraged to take the Test of Spoken English.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security requires students with an F-1 visa:

  • to be enrolled full time
  • to obtain authorization from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security before seeking or accepting paid employment
  • to notify the U.S. Department of Homeland Security when they terminate their attendance at the university.

The U.S. Department of States requires international students with a J-1 visa:

  • to be enrolled full time
  • to neither seek nor accept paid employment in the U.S.
  • to return to their home country for two years after completing their planned studies in the U.S.

International students who wish to study in the U.S. must have sufficient funds available to cover expenses for one full year before attempting to enter a degree program. The cost of tuition at the University for full time study in one academic year is approximately $26,000 including the tuition, living expenses, health insurance and books and supplies ant etc.

Leave of Absence

If a degree student finds it is necessary to interrupt active study in the program, he or she may petition the Dean’s Office for a leave of absence for a specific period of time, generally limited to one year. A degree student who discontinues active enrollment in degree studies without being granted a leave of absence, or a student granted a leave who does not return to active study at the close of the period of approved leave, must apply for readmission.

Nondiscrimination Policy

The University of Management and Technology is committed to the principle of equal opportunity in education and employment. The University does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, veteran status, ancestry, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, employment policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other University administered programs and activities.

Proctored Examination

Proctored exams are integral to the UMT degree programs. Students must complete an individualized proctored exam for each 30 credit-hours earned. Proctored exams are graded pass/fail and do not affect grade point averages. Students must pass their proctored exams to continue their studies or receive a degree. If a student fails a proctored exam, he/she may retake it once.

Semester Credit-Hours

Credit-hours earned at UMT are semester credit-hours. In general, three credit-hour courses entail at least 45 instructional hours. Students also are expected to spend an additional 45-60 hours in course-related study and activities.

Time Limits

Undergraduate Programs

The associate’s degrees must be completed within a five-year period. The bachelor’s degrees also must be completed within a five-year period.

Graduate Programs

MS and MPA programs must be completed within 3 years. The MBA must be completed within 5 years.

Withdrawal Policy

A student who wishes to withdraw from a course must inform the University in writing, either via mail, fax, or e-mail. If a student withdraws prior to the fifth week of the semester, the course registration information will removed from the University’s official records and will not appear on the student’s transcript. If a student withdraws during or after the fifth week of the course, the grade will be reported on the transcript as W (withdrawal).
