Overview
Q: What are UMT's degree
programs?
UMT's degree programs include:
Q: What are UMT's Corporate Training Programs?
UMT's Corporate
Training Programs consist of a series
of training
courses that provide specific knowledge
about management areas that are vital to the success
of modern organizations.
The courses,
which last from 1 to 5 days, present the latest,
most practical aspects
of today's management
frameworks. Consistently high standards in program
presentation and the university's "Internet-enhanced" learning
approach have earned the UMT an excellent reputation
both in the United States and overseas.
Q. What
other educational services does UMT provide?
UMT also has a Graduate
Certificate program,
Executive
Certificate programs, and Project
Management Suite -- a self-paced study program.
Q: Not
ready to commit to a degree but want to learn?
You don't have to formally apply to
a degree program to take our courses. UMT offers a
step-by-step Learning Gateway Solution for your studies.
Start with a self-paced course. Then you can take additional
courses to prepare for certification. You can transfer
up to 12 academic credits from the self-paced courses
to one of the degree programs or to our graduate certificate.

Admission Requirements
Q: How do I obtain an application?
An application is available online
for both the master's degree programs and the undergraduate
degree programs: Online
Application.
If you have questions, please contact us at (703)
516-0035 or send email to info@umtweb.edu.
Q: What are the admission deadlines?
There is no deadline for admission.
UMT adopts a year-round admission policy.
Q: What are the admission
requirements?
Please visit the links below to see
admission requirements for:
For the graduate program applicant,
the admissions committee will also weigh the following
criteria:
- Does the
applicant have a GPA of 2.75?
- Does the applicant have an
undergraduate degree from an accredited program?
- Does the
applicant have at least two years work experience?
Applicants will be notified quickly of the admission
decision, but no later than one month from date of
submittal.
Q: Can I waive the TOEFL requirement?
The Test for English as a Foreign Language is administered
to foreign students wishing to study at a US university.
UMT requires that students score at least 550 for admission
to the master's degree programs. Even then, students
may have to take extra English courses in their first
semester, based on an English placement test after
arrival. (Students who score 600 or higher are exempt
from this requirement).
Please note that if a foreign student
already has a degree from a university where the teaching
language
is English (US, Canada, UK, Australia, etc.) , the
TOEFL exam is not required.
UMT's Institutional Code for TOEFL
is 7853.
Q: Do I need to take the GRE or GMAT test?
The examinations are not required for the master's
degree programs. Good scores on these tests (560 or
better for GMAT, for example), if taken in the last
five years, could be helpful to the committee in considering
a student's application for the master's degree program.
UMT's Institutional Code for both
the GRE is 5592 and for the GMAT is: Full-Time
MBA: XVM-MN-64 and Part-time MBA: XVM-MN-23.
Degree Information
Q: How
quickly can I complete the degree program?
Two classes per semester are
considered to be a full-time load for graduate students.
Thus, a 33-credit-hour
master of science degree would normally be completed
in a little more than one year.
The MBA, which is 45 credit hours, would take longer.
This could be accelerated if a student is able to transfer
credits from another graduate program. However, students
are cautioned on taking on too much, too fast. The
courses are demanding
and students must maintain a "B" average
to stay in the program.
Q: How flexible is the program to fit my individual
goals and needs?
UMT is dedicated to ensuring that each student gets
the maximum benefit from his or her educational experience.
Advisors can help guide students in the selection of
courses and tracks that suit their individual needs.
UMT will make every effort to help students get the
most of their master's degree.
Q: Can I take the degree part time?
Yes, in fact most current students
are enrolled part-time. We recognize that most of those
who are interested
in this program are already in the work force. The
MS in Management must be completed within a three-year
period. The MBA degree must be
completed within a five-year period.
Q: What are the course requirements?
The MBA program requires students
to take 15 3-credit courses, for a total of 45 credit-hours
of study (see
course catalog for listing of actual courses). The
Master of Science in Management requires students to
take 33 credit-hours, or 11 courses. Six of these are
core courses, the remaining five are track courses.
For the MS degree, there are five tracks to choose
from: Project Management, Acquisition Management, Telecommunications
Management, Public Sector
Management,
and General Management.
Tuition, Financial Aid, and Course Credits
Additional information can be found here.
Q: How much is the tuition?
UMT’s tuition is $390
per credit hour. This does not include nominal university
fees, the application
fee, textbooks and materials, etc.
Q: Can I get financial aid?
The university offers UMT Military
Scholarships for qualified military personnel. UMT
also offers a limited number of teaching and research
assistantships
to students. UMT is approved for VA GI Bill Education
Benefits (www.gibill.va.gov).
All active duty, veterans, or selected reserve candidates
must verify their benefits
with VA prior to enrollment.
Q: Can I waive some of the course requirements?
In the MS in Management program, up to two core management
courses can be waived, subject to approval by UMT officials.
In the specialty tracks, up to two courses may be waived
but then they must be substituted with two other courses
approved by the Program Director.
Q: Can I transfer graduate credits from another university?
For both the MS in Management and MBA degrees, up
to six credit-hours of course work may be transferred
from another degree program in which the student has
been enrolled. The Director of Enrollment will decide
whether credit is eligible to be transferred.
Q: Can I get credit for life
experience?
If students possess extraordinary life experiences,
the Program Director may elect to waive courses in
areas where these students are acknowledged experts.
For example, a Chief Financial Officer for an organization
may be granted a waiver for Mgt 280: Finance Principles
and Mgt 281: Accounting Principles. A contracting attorney
may be granted a waiver for Mgt 202: Business Law and
Mgt 254: Contracts and Procurement. Up to six credit
hours of course work may be waived. It is handled on
a case-by-case basis, looking at the student's overall
work and academic profile.
Q: Can
I get college credit by examination using DSST, CLEP,
or other exams?
Yes. UMT awards credits for examinations using the ACE guidelines. UMT's DSST institution code is 8186.
Project
Management
Q: What is project management?
Project management is often
referred to as the "accidental
profession" because most of those currently engaged
in project management didn't set out to do so, but
rather were assigned to a project by senior management.
However, as organizations down size, outsource, and
re-engineer their management structures, they increasingly
set up smaller, discrete work units, often cutting
across existing departments and divisions. In fact,
many larger organizations are "projectizing" their
work. A project usually has a beginning, a middle,
and an end. This is what sets it apart from "process" management.
Project managers often describe their jobs as delivering
a product or service "on time, within budget,
and according to specifications."
Q: What is the PMBOK?
Part of the course work is based on A
Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge or
PMBOK, an extensive collection of information formulated
by the Project Management
Institute, with which the program is closely aligned.
The PMBOK was
created by professionals from scores of industries
and reflects what project management practitioners
refer to as the nine core competencies: scope management,
time management, cost management, human resource management,
risk management, quality management, communications
management, and overall integration. Students are expected
to master these competencies through theoretical and
practical applications.
Q: What is meant by Project Management certification
or the PMP exam?
As project management has evolved,
efforts have been made to set standards and establish
a certification
process for the Project Management Professional (PMP).
The most widespread certification effort is through
the Project Management Institute, which administers
a certification exam worldwide based on the PMBOK's
core competency areas (see previous question).
Those
who have obtained the Executive Certificate and gone
through
the MS degree program are well-positioned to then take
and pass the PMI certification exam. For more information,
visit PMI's web site at www.pmi.org.
Q: Where can
I find information on which UMT courses are registered
at PMI and how many PDUs they
carry?
To see a list (which expands every year) of UMT courses
registered at PMI and the numbers of PDU they carry,
visit the
R.E.P. Programs database on UMT on the PMI website.
