In
an environment of change, complexity, and uncertainty,
many organizations are turning to project management
as a vehicle for implementing sophisticated coping
strategies. In the process, they're discovering that
much of the conventional wisdom about managing projects
is marginally relevant at best.
The Center for Project
Excellence serves as a resource to these organizations
and their managers as they
seek to reinvent the project management discipline.
Its overall goal is to both shape and chart the
course of project management theory and practice by:
- Performing original research on project management
and related topics.
- Developing and testing methods
and techniques that will further project management
and related
disciplines.
- Serving as the world's premier repository
and clearinghouse on best practices as employed
by leading organizations.
- Offering symposia and other
forums on key issues and trends.
- Hosting visiting
lecturers and researches from industry, government,
and academia.
- Publishing information of interest
to project management professionals.
- Assessing Competence
The center works with clients to assess the competence
of organizations, teams, and individuals. Participants
are guided through organizational and self-assessment
processes that cover such areas as project management
knowledge, people management skills, business related
competence, and organizational pathologies. The methods
closely follow those in Project Management Competence,
a book by UMT Academic Dean J.
Davidson Frame.
