Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

UMT’s Information Technology program is comprised of a two-year, lower-level Associate of Science in Information Technology (ASIT) and a follow on two-year, upper-level Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT).

A maximum of 75 percent of the required credit-hours for either degree may be transferred toward either program and 25 percent of the credit-hours may include credit for relevant professional and work experience.

BSIT PROGRAM

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) is a degree-completion program comprising 60 semester credit-hours of instruction at the upper level (junior and senior years). Students entering the BSIT program already will have completed a minimum of 60 semester credit-hours of college-level studies, either at UMT or at another appropriately accredited institution. Typically, the student's lower-level credits will include courses covering the core curriculum of the UMT ASIT.

The field of information technology (IT) focuses the application of computers and computer software to manage information systems to meet the needs of industry and government. The development, management, and maintenance of IT systems are key competitive factors that are essential to business success in today's world. The BSIT degree is designed to help working adults extend and enhance their job skills and to improve their career in the field. The roles of IT professionals range from installing applications to designing computer networks and databases. The core areas include:

  • Computer Architecture
  • Program Logic and Design
  • Programming in a Higher-Level Language
  • Object-Oriented Software Design and Development
  • Database Management Systems (DBMS)
  • Data Communications and Networking
  • Computer Network Security
  • Project Management
  • Management Information Systems (MIS)
  • Decision Support Systems (DSS)

In addition, the degree programs (and the executive certificate) are designed with the following major goals:

  • To provide students with a foundation in the theoretical concepts of IT that reflect current practice in industry and academia.
  • To provide students with opportunities to develop practical knowledge, skills, and abilities across the curriculum, including general education and specialized computer science and information technology disciplines.

Finally, the IT degrees and certificate program build on UMT's experience and proven expertise in business administration and project management. Graduates of these programs also are ideal candidates to pursue the MSIT at UMT.

BSIT Core Curriculum

Consistent with UMT’s other undergraduate degree programs, students must complete a minimum of 120 semester credit-hours. Within these 120 credit-hours, a minimum of 30 (25%) must be classifiable as general education. The core curriculum of the degree programs is listed in table below.

BSIT Areas of Concentration

The BSIT program does not require students to complete an area of concentration. However, it does allow students to complete any of the areas of concentration (majors) offered by the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) program, namely: Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, and Software Engineering. To complete an area of concentration, the student must complete five courses (15 semester credit-hours), selected from those listed below in the corresponding concentration. Students may choose courses from other areas of concentration as electives.
