Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice
 

UMT’s criminal justice program is comprised of a two-year, lower-level Associate of Science in Criminal Justice (ASCJ) and a follow on two-year, upper-level Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (BSCJ).

A maximum of 75 percent of the required credit-hours for either degree may be transferred toward either program and 25 percent of the credit-hours may include credit for relevant professional and work experience.

BSCJ PROGRAM

The BSCJ requires completion of a total of 120 semester credit-hours of instruction, 60 of which are at the upper level (junior and senior years). Students must have completed a minimum of 60 semester credit-hours of college-level studies at the lower level (freshman and sophomore years). Within the required 120 semester credit-hours a student must also complete at least 30 semester credit-hours in General Education in total to receive a BSCJ degree.

Upon successful completion of the bachelor’s in criminal justice, students will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental concepts, roles, and functions of criminal justice and the criminal justice system.
  • Evaluate the value of leading management theories and practices as applied to criminal justice administration.
  • Synthesize new knowledge as a result of independent research using up-to-date information technology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of general education topics consistent with graduates of comparable Bachelor of Science degree programs.
  • Apply basic statistical methods and research methods to problems in criminal justice.

BSCJ Degree Requirements

The curriculum is divided into three areas:

  • Core courses (30 semester credit-hours)
  • General Education (30 semester credit-hours)
  • Electives (60 semester credit-hours)

BSCJ Prerequisites

Students must complete or be able to transfer either Psy 100 & 101 (Psychology I & II) or Soc 100 & 101 (Sociology I & II) as a prerequisite for completion of the BSCJ program.

BSCJ Core Courses

The BSCJ Core comprises ten courses. Note that for students who have earned the ASCJ at UMT, they will have completed the first five of these ten courses as part of the ASCJ.

The ten Core courses address the fundamental topics that are relevant to criminal justice, including criminal justice, corrections, law enforcement, statistics, management, criminology, ethics, and law.
